Sunnah means: the prophet's sayings, what he did and what his companions did and to which he showed no objection. There are three things dealt with here-speech, action and the acceptance of action by others.
Sometimes we say Hadith and mean what the prophet (PBUH) said to his companions about matters of practice, belief and other matters of daily life. The second kind of Sunnah deals with actions of the prophet such as the way of performing prayer ablution pilgrimage and other related matters.
The third kind of Sunnah is the acceptance of what other people have done such as having seen some of his companions do or say what was not objectionable in the sight of the prophet (PBUH). These three kinds of Sunnah are all attributed to the prophet (PBUH).
The Sunnah is the second source of Islamic belief and law the first source is the Qur'an. The Sunnah is the Qur'an an explanation or interaction. We have been ordered by the Qur'an to follow the Sunnah of the prophet (PBUH) and it obligatory to carry out the instructions give in the Sunnah for the Qur'an says" what the prophet ordered you to do".
It is thus clear that first the Qur'an and then the Sunnah are the basis of Islamic law (shari'ah) or shari3a. This was recognized by all the companions of the prophet (PBUH), all Muslim jurists, and by all the generations or Muslims who come afterwards.
