The teachings of Islam outline a way of based on faith (Iman) and good deeds (salihat). Faith is not merely a proclamation of belief in the existence of Allah and the truth of His messenger Muhammad (PBUH) but also the putting of our beliefs into practice by fulfilling our obligations to Allah and to man. Islam is not only concerned with man's relationship to Allah but also with his relationship with his society. And since the quality of a society depends upon the quality of its individuals Islam stresses the importance of the personal characters.
Among the teachings of Islam great emphasis is laid on piety. (Taqwa). Piety refers to an attitude of action the awareness of Allah and capriciousness of one's responsibility to Him. As such it is mentioned in the Qur'an as being the foundation of a Muslim's character. God-consciousness provides man with a sound conscience. Man's conduct is governed by his awareness of his responsibility to Allah and this awareness can make a great difference in his life both here and hereafter.
In the teachings of Islam great emphasis is placed on humility, modesty, control of passions and desires truthfulness integrity patience and steadfastness. We are enjoined to fulfill our promises and contracts to keep trusts to meet our engagements and to repay our debts.
On the other hand Muslims should avoid envy. Hypocrisy flattery ridicules obscenity back-biting calumny and vanity.
Clearly therefore to be pious means to be a person of true and fine convictions of determination and character of will and courage and above all to be a man of Allah. Piety righteousness and meaning faith are interrelated and lead to the building up of a true Muslim.
